History of Passion, Tradition and Taste

1826

THE FIRST LABORATORY

Pier Paul Caffarel arrives in Turin with his passion for chocolate and the dream to open his own lab. He takes over a small tannery on the outskirts of the town and he creates the laboratory, one of the first chocolate factories in Italy and Europe.

1852

COCOA AND HAZELNUTS FOR THE FIRST TIME TOGETHER

At Caffarel they try to mix cocoa with Gentle Round Hazelnuts of the Langhe. The result is a deliciously soft dough which is then shaped into small boats. Its name is "givu" which means “cigarette butt" in Piedmontese dialect. It is the ancestor of the most extraordinary invention of Caffarel.

1865

THE FIRST GIANDUIOTTO

Chocolate lovers, take note of this date: it is the birth of Gianduiotto. During the carnival of Turin Gianduja, the traditional character of the town, throws to the celebrating people chocolates never tasted before. They are soon named after Gianduja: they are the Gianduiotti, the first chocolates wrapped one by one.

1867

CAFFAREL IS AWARDED WITH AN IMPORTANT TITLE

Caffarel is elected in Paris as a member of the National Academy of France.

1869

ON THE TABLE OF THE KINGS

Victor Emmanuel II, King of Italy and Elisabeth of Saxony, Duchess of Genoa grant Caffarel with the title of Royal Warrant. Caffarel adds on its packing the royal and the ducal crests.

1893

THE CONQUEST OF AMERICA

Chicago hosts the World Colombian fair, organized to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. Who is awarded with the Certificate of Merit for purity and excellence in making Chocolate? That's right, it is Caffarel.

1926

THE SUITCASE OF DELICACIES

Entering into the shops our salesmen are noticed at first sight thanks to their suitcase containing samples of the entire production range. A real catalog to be tasted.

1937

THE EXTRUSION OF GIANDUIOTTO

An invention that we still use today. A mechanism that performs perfectly, in all its elegance, the gesture of the Chocolate Master who squeezes out from the pastry bag the cocoa and hazelnuts dough in order to get the soft and velvety drop of Gianduiotto.

1951

WHEN MARKETING WAS CALLED “RÉCLAME”

We start the first promotional competitions for shops, to award the most beautiful shop windows exhibiting our Gianduia 1865.

1968

BACK TO OUR MOUNTAINS

The historical site of Turin, in a city that is expanding rapidly, is no longer suitable to the development of the company. So we go back to our roots, to the village in the mountains of Piedmont, where Pier Paul Caffarel was born. A new home, a new production plant, strongly tied to our history and our Piedmontese identity.

1990

THE CANDIES

Sweetness is never enough. So we decide to put all the care we devote to chocolate also into producing candies. Always with the same Caffarel quality: noblesse oblige.

1991

THE CAFFAREL LIMOUSINE

How to spread our history and style during fairs and events? With the Caffarel Limousine, which recalls the lines and the elegance typical of the Belle Epoque. A "time machine" for a fascinating journey through the most delicious history of chocolate.

1998

ACQUISITION BY THE LINDT&SPRÜNGLI GROUP

The acquisition brings a unique know-how in the world and combines two absolute excellences in chocolate production.

A global event that links the city where we were born to the mountains where we work. A perfect opportunity to communicate: so we got the license to use the logo of the Committee for the Organization of the 20th Winter Olympic Games of Turin 2006, and we designed a collectible line of packaging.

2007

HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK

Creating and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for all the people: this has always been the aim of Caffarel, which resulted in obtaining the OHSAS 18001 for the management system of occupational health and safety.

2008
