"The Gianduia 1865, the authentic Gianduiotto of Turin."
The story of the Gianduiotto began in 1852, when Caffarel introduced a new type of chocolate obtained by carefully mixing cocoa, sugar and the famous "Tonda Gentile delle Langhe" hazelnuts that were renowned for their particularly fine, tasty character.Using this sweet-smelling base, Caffarel began producing a chocolate specialty in 1865 that was unique in every way - even in its shape. A true hand-made product, it was originally given the name of "givù", a word taken from the traditional dialect spoken in Piedmont.
The name was soon replaced by "Gianduiotto", a term that is now famous among chocolate lovers and gourmands all over the world. The godfather of the new name was Gianduja, Gian d’la duja or Giovanni del Boccale - a local farmer who is reported to have invented the characteristic, delightful mask of Piedmont that features a little tail pointing upwards and a tricorn hat. The mask was the symbol of the battle for independence which was fought in Piedmont in 1799.
During Carnival celebrations in 1865, the playful and beloved Gianduja rewarded crowds with the wonderful new chocolates and authorised Caffarel to use his name. Because of this honour, which had never been (and was never to be) conferred on any other product, Caffarel decided to baptise its creation with his name.
